69Express Opens as Kansas' First Toll Express Lanes
$572 million Overland Park project aims to reduce congestion on heavily traveled U.S. 69 corridor
TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly joined federal and local officials Tuesday to celebrate the completion of Kansas' first express toll lanes on U.S. 69 in Overland Park, marking a milestone in the state's efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure. The $572 million project, known as 69Express, adds one express lane in each direction between 103rd and 151st Streets and includes interchange improvements, with lanes scheduled to open to traffic Saturday at 8 a.m.
The express lanes will use dynamic tolling to manage congestion on a corridor that sees more than 80,000 vehicles daily, with traffic expected to grow 30% by 2050. Drivers with KTAG transponders will pay the lowest rates—50% less than those without—and can enter or exit the express lanes at three points: 103rd Street, Blue Valley Parkway, and 151st Street. The project was funded through the state's 10-year Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program and represents a partnership between the Kansas Department of Transportation and Kansas Turnpike Authority to provide reliable travel times as the Johnson County area continues to grow.
