District to bolster pedestrian safety at Wolves stadium after accident
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - Following a recent pedestrian accident on Monroe Avenue, Sweetwater County School District No. 2 will implement immediate safety measures for events at Wolves Stadium. Superintendent Dr. Scott Cooper announced at Tuesday’s board meeting that temporary crossing guards, flashing speed signs and traffic cones will be used during the final two home football games of the season. Cooper said the district is working with the city on long-term solutions, including pursuing grants for improved lighting and crosswalks, with a goal of starting permanent upgrades next summer.
Transportation dept. highlights safety efforts, alarming stop-arm violations
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - The district’s transportation department detailed its comprehensive bus safety curriculum, which includes teaching danger zones, proper bus stop behavior and evacuation procedures to students from elementary through high school. Transportation Director Rachel Todd reported that there have been 18 illegal stop-arm violations so far this school year, where vehicles unlawfully passed a stopped bus. The department is piloting a new “junior bus captain” program for fourth and fifth graders to build leadership and reinforce safety knowledge among students.
FFA construction project bid awarded to Madsen Construction
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - The school board unanimously approved a bid of $165,750 from Madsen Construction for a new Future Farmers of America building project. The bid was significantly lower than the only other proposal. Superintendent Dr. Scott Cooper noted that while the project can move forward with foundation work before the ground freezes, there is an estimated 14-week lead time for the delivery of the metal structure, which will be a key factor in the overall construction timeline.
Concerns raised over needs at McKinnon elementary
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - Following a recent “meet and greet” event at McKinnon Elementary, board members reported on key facility and service issues facing the rural school. Trustee Tom Wilson highlighted the need for air conditioning, noting a past district commitment to air condition all elementary schools had overlooked McKinnon. Staffing shortages have also limited the hot lunch program to two days a week, prompting creative suggestions, including the possibility of bringing in a food truck to supplement meal options for students.
Design concepts for CTE facility expansion coming in November
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - The district is moving forward with plans to remodel and expand its Career and Technical Education facilities at Green River High School. An update from QC10 Architects revealed that three primary concepts are being developed: constructing a new, separate building; building an addition to the existing CTE rooms; or completing a major renovation within the current footprint. The architects will present conceptual drawings and preliminary cost estimates for each option at the November board meeting.
Lincoln Middle School program solves staff childcare needs
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - Lincoln Middle School has launched an innovative before-school program where eighth-grade students in an infant care class provide supervised care for the elementary-aged children of district staff. Assistant Principal Sydney Hooten and teacher Jamie Kennedy presented the program, which currently serves 29 children of 17 staff members. The middle schoolers plan and lead activities, from academic help to outdoor games, gaining leadership skills while solving a critical childcare gap for teachers and paraprofessionals. The program has become so popular that a formal application process is being developed for next year.
Tennis team and coach Harder recognized for championship season
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - The Green River High School tennis program was honored for a season of outstanding achievements. Head Coach Phil Harder was recognized as the 4A South Regional Boys Coach of the Year, an award he has won multiple times. The board celebrated the boys team for its undefeated 7-0 conference record and regional championship title, as well as the girls team, which finished as the regional runner-up. Numerous individual players were also recognized for earning all-conference selections and top placements at regional and state competitions.
