School board advances plans for new FFA facility

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — The Sweetwater County School District #2 Board of Trustees reviewed and advanced a proposal for a new Future Farmers of America agricultural facility during a special meeting Wednesday. The multi-phase project, located on a nearly four-acre parcel near the 4-H facility, is designed to provide students with hands-on ranching experience. The long-term vision includes barns for sheep, goats, steers and swine, creating opportunities for students who may not otherwise have access to agricultural land.

Sheep and goat barn identified as first priority in FFA project

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — The first structure to be built at the new Future Farmers of America site will be a sheep and goat barn, district officials confirmed. This building is the immediate focus because it requires a concrete foundation that must be poured before winter. The design includes indoor space, exterior pens and insulated water tanks to support year-round animal care. Officials aim to have the facility operational so students can bring in animals this winter.

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — The new sheep and goat barn will feature practical solutions for Wyoming winters. Because shallow utility lines prevent a direct winter water hookup, the building will house a large, insulated water tank. Heating will be provided by propane, with overhead heaters to keep temperatures just above freezing. Each stall will have electrical outlets for heat lamps to support animal safety, including for newborn livestock.

Fencing installation for new FFA site begins next week

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — The first visible sign of construction at the new Future Farmers of America facility will begin next week, with fencing scheduled to be installed starting on the 24th. The fence will secure the approximately 3.5-acre property where the new agricultural barns will be located—marking a key step toward welcoming student livestock projects later this fall and winter.

Students to help construct new steer barn

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — Students in the Future Farmers of America program will get practical construction experience by helping assemble a set of steer stalls purchased with a $20,000 grant. FFA teachers and students, with assistance from the district’s maintenance department, will build out the structure—giving students a direct role in creating the facilities they will use for livestock projects.

Community businesses provide financial backing for FFA students

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — Local businesses are stepping up to support students participating in the district’s expanding Future Farmers of America program. During a presentation to the board, it was noted that Ranchhand Welding & Fabrication, Inc. has provided a loan to a student to cover the upfront cost of purchasing and feeding a steer. Trona Valley Federal Credit Union is also reportedly working with students on similar financing, helping remove barriers and allowing more participants to house animals at the new facility.
