Board approves new professional development plan

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The USD 308 Board of Education unanimously approved a new Professional Development Council manual Monday, overhauling the system educators use to maintain their state licensure. The plan aligns with Kansas State Department of Education guidance and will be submitted as required. It introduces a new incentive-based structure for earning professional development points and governs how teachers and staff acquire and document the ongoing education required to keep licenses current. The motion passed 6-0.

New teacher plan aims to boost student achievement

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - District administrators said the newly approved professional development plan is tied to strategies for improving test scores and closing learning gaps. The plan emphasizes training in evidence-based methods, including the science of reading via Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling training and “Visible Learning,” a research-based approach that stresses teacher clarity. Research synthesized by Visible Learning shows teacher clarity can have a large impact on learning, supporting the district’s focus on clarity to accelerate student growth.

Incentive program encourages practical application of teacher training

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - A key feature is an incentive structure that rewards application and impact. A three-hour training session earns three professional development points; if the educator applies the new skills, points may be doubled; if they demonstrate measurable student growth, points may be tripled, turning three points into nine. That mirrors Kansas regulations for awarding professional development points at application and impact levels.

District offers free development services to community educators

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - USD 308 provides professional development point-tracking services at no cost to educators outside the district, including retired educators, homeschool teachers and licensed teachers at local non-accredited private schools. They can attend district training and have plans approved to fulfill state license-renewal requirements, with the district acting as a “Professional Development Council warehouse” for the wider community under the Kansas State Department of Education’s program framework.

Board approves nearly $95,000 for emergency HVAC replacement

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The board approved the emergency purchase of a new rooftop HVAC unit for the Hutchinson Career & Technical Education Academy at a cost of $94,624. The 40-ton Trane unit replaces an original unit from about 2000 that suffered a critical coil failure. Officials noted the old unit used R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured in the U.S. The approved cost is for the unit itself; with crane and installation, the project is expected to total around $100,000. The purchase was approved 6-0.

District responds swiftly to parent parking complaints

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - A concern from a board member about narrow parking stalls at the Shirlie J. Hutcherson Center was already addressed by district maintenance. Following parent feedback at a Head Start meeting, crews ground off the old lines, widened stalls from 8.5 feet to a standard 9 feet and repainted the lot in-house.
