Board adjusts 2026-27 calendar regarding Veterans Day and testing
HURON, S.D. - The school board reviewed the first draft of the 2026-2027 school calendar, requesting significant changes before final approval. Board members unanimously agreed to reject a committee recommendation to hold classes on Veterans Day, opting instead to keep the holiday as a day off and add a school day to the end of the year on May 19. Additionally, at the request of Director of Curriculum Linda Pietz, the board agreed to remove an early release date in April to provide a full week of uninterrupted instruction for state testing.
CTE curriculum materials available for public review
HURON, S.D. - Director of Curriculum Linda Pietz reported that the district is currently reviewing curriculum for career and technical education (CTE) courses, ranging from auto tech and welding to interior design and health sciences. Sample materials from vendors have been delivered to Huron Middle School and Huron High School and are currently being evaluated by staff using a matrix focused on state standards and rigor. Pietz noted that these materials are also available for public review and input at the school buildings over the next two months.
Superintendent reports on student attendance rates
HURON, S.D. - Superintendent Kraig Steinhoff presented an attendance report covering the period from the start of school through Dec. 5, fulfilling a board goal to monitor student presence. The Washington 4-5 Center led the district with a 95.31 percent attendance rate, followed by the Madison 2-3 Center at 93.97 percent and the Buchanan K-1 Center at 93.76 percent. Huron High School reported the lowest attendance rate at 88.2 percent.
Engineers hired to solve high school kitchen ventilation issues
HURON, S.D. - The board approved a $9,875 proposal from JLG Architects to develop engineering plans for the Huron High School kitchen exhaust hood and equipment. Business Manager Kelly Christopherson explained that the project, originally planned for last summer, was halted because the existing roof structure cannot support the weight of the necessary makeup air unit required to prevent negative pressure in the building. The new study will determine if the equipment can be modified to fit the roof or if a separate structure is required next to the school.
Roofing projects near completion at middle and high schools
HURON, S.D. - Installation of the new roof at Huron Middle School is nearly complete, pending weather conditions this week, according to Business Manager Kelly Christopherson. With that phase winding down, construction crews have shifted their focus to Huron High School, where the tear-off process and roof replacement are now officially underway.
Transportation director to resign after 12 years
HURON, S.D. - The board accepted the resignation of Director of Transportation Kathy Bostrom, effective Nov. 26, 2025. Bostrom has served the district for 12 years.
