5 takeaways from Smoky Valley USD 400 school board meeting

District to Spend $166,302 on New School Bus

In a unanimous 7-0 vote, the board approved purchasing a Thomas C2 71-passenger bus from Midwest Bus Sales for $166,302. The motion was made by Karla Pihl and seconded by Bryce Wampler.

Driver’s-Ed Fee Raised; New Agriculture Course Fees Introduced

Student fees for 2025-26 were adopted, including an increase in Driver’s Education from $125 to $150 and new $25-per-semester feesfor Animal Science, Ag Mechanics, Agri Business Management and Intro to Ag. The board reaffirmed that activity/sports fees are waived for students who qualify for free meals.

New Superintendent Marks Positive Start

Superintendent Quentin Breese reported “a great start” to his tenure, is meeting staff, and invited board members to a Welcome-Back Breakfast for all employees. District principals are not required to attend June–July meetings.

Board Explores Cyber-Security Insurance

Insurance broker Mike Dreier briefed the board on optional cyber-security coverage; the discussion was informational and no vote was taken.

School Board Adopts Home-Rule Resolution

Trustees approved a Home Rule resolution empowering the board to “transact all school-district business and adopt policies the board deems appropriate” for 2025-26, while still complying with state law.
