5 takeaways from Sublette County School District #1 board meeting

Policy Allowing Armed Personnel in Schools Receives Final Approval

The board unanimously passed the second and final reading of Policy CKA, “Firearms: Personnel Authorized to Carry.” This vote formalizes the district’s policy regarding authorized staff members carrying firearms on school grounds. The approval was one of many policy updates the board passed, as part of a comprehensive two-year plan to review all district policies.

Pinedale Aquatic Center to Receive $1.55 Million, Signs New 5-Year Lease

Trustees approved a service contract to pay the Pinedale Aquatic Center (PAC) $1,550,000 for its services during the 2025-2026 fiscal year. In a related measure, the board also unanimously approved a new, five-year lease agreement with the PAC for the fiscal years 2025-2030.

School Meal Prices to Rise This Fall

Families in the district will see a slight increase in the cost of school meals this year after the board approved a $0.40 price hike. The increase is broken down into $0.15 for breakfast and $0.25 for lunch. Director of Operations Jeryl Fluckiger explained the change was necessary due to rising food and labor costs. He noted that even with the new prices, the district will still need to subsidize the food service program, a common practice for school districts across Wyoming.

CTE Building Project Clears City Hurdle

The Career Technical Education (CTE) building project is proceeding as planned after the Pinedale Town Council approved a necessary variance. An update provided by administrator Jeryl Fluckiger revealed that the building’s roof peak was found to be inches above the limit set by city ordinance. The town council’s approval allows construction to continue without alterations to the design or schedule.

District and BOCES to Restructure Technology Services Agreement

The school board discussed a proposal from Sublette BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) to terminate their long-standing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for technology services due to extensive budget cuts at BOCES. Under the old agreement, BOCES contributed to the salary of the district’s tech director in exchange for equipment and support. The board was favorable to a new plan where technology services would be incorporated directly into the BOCES lease agreement, a move they believe will provide more specific and preferable terms. Following the advice of the district’s attorney, the board will wait for BOCES to provide a newly drafted lease that includes these changes for approval at the August meeting, with the MOU termination set for August 15, 2025, to ensure continuous service.
