The City of Hutchinson closed westbound 30th Avenue between Apple Lane and K-61 Highway effective immediately Thursday, Aug. 20, citing the potential risk of roadway collapse after a storm pipe failed beneath the pavement. According to the city's road closure notice, westbound drivers are directed to use Apple Lane to 17th Avenue and back up K-61 until the city releases an official detour map, and a signed detour will be in place. Repair work is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 24; the notice does not give an estimated reopening date or a cost for the work.

Citizen Journal previously reported that the break is at least the second storm pipe failure to close a Hutchinson street in 2026, following [the April washout that shut 11th Street](https://www.citizenjournal.us/11th-street-closed-in-hutchinson-after-storm-pipe-failure-causes-road-washout/), and that it comes after storm line repairs on North Plum Street in December 2025\. It is also the second disruption on the 30th Avenue corridor this summer, after traffic at 30th and Plum Street was reduced to single lanes in June ahead of a water valve project.
