The expansion will add programs in construction trades, machining, health and human services and fire science. Harper noted the college is working closely with the city to potentially relocate the fire science program from Winfield to Wellington, while also expanding its Certified Nursing Assistant offerings. A board work session detailing the expansion plans will be held Sept. 21 in Mulvane. --- ### Cowley College hires new regional workforce director WELLINGTON, Kan. — Cowley College has hired Ian Freeman as the new regional workforce director to represent all of the college's locations, including the Sumner campus in Wellington. Freeman will focus on connecting the college with local businesses and fulfilling regional workforce training needs. He is currently training in Arkansas City and will soon begin traveling throughout Sumner County to meet with local companies. --- ### City engineers evaluate options for the Donut Bay dam WELLINGTON, Kan. — The city is currently working with Professional Engineering Consultants to evaluate the future of the Donut Bay dam following recent heavy rainfall and flooding. Responding to an inquiry during the meeting, city staff confirmed that engineers have taken measurements to determine whether the city should preserve the existing structure or build a parallel dam. Staff expect to present phase one results to the council soon to determine how to proceed with necessary permitting and phase two of the project. --- ### City seeks state assistance for damaged Rock Island Fields fence WELLINGTON, Kan. — City officials toured Sumner County with representatives from the Kansas Division of Emergency Management on Tuesday to assess recent storm damage, including downed fences at Rock Island Fields. It was noted during the tour that this is the second time in eight years the fences have blown down. The city plans to ask the agency for financial assistance for repairs or guidance on potential mitigation options to prevent future infrastructure damage at the local fields. --- ### Council appoints new member to Wellington Park Board WELLINGTON, Kan. — The city council unanimously appointed a new member to fill a vacancy on the Wellington Park Board during Tuesday's meeting. The appointee was selected from a pool of applicants. After the vote, the new board member briefly addressed the council and said he looks forward to new adventures serving the local parks system. --- ### Council praises economic impact of annual Wheat Festival WELLINGTON, Kan. — Council members celebrated the success of the recent Wellington Wheat Festival, highlighting its positive impact on local businesses and downtown foot traffic. The council praised the Wellington Area Chamber of Commerce, sponsors and volunteers for organizing what was called the "best Wheat Festival ever."
