A city official noted the city owns property to the north and east of a nearby road and 30th Avenue that is currently ambiguous, with some areas heavily wooded or being used for farming and pasture. Establishing exact property lines could open potential revenue-generating uses or improve water inflow to the lake. The measure passed 5-1, with one council member casting the lone dissenting vote. --- ### City to replace collapsed pipe causing long-term flooding WELLINGTON, Kan. — A collapsed clay tile line responsible for 15 to 20 years of stormwater backup near the intersection of Third and G streets will soon be replaced. The city council unanimously approved a $39,500 agreement with Dondlinger of Wichita to remove and replace approximately 180 feet of pipe with 12-inch Standard Dimension Ratio 35 pipe. City staff explained that crews recently attempted to clean the area's inlets with a vacuum truck to no avail, leading to the discovery of the collapsed line a block south. Funds for the repair will be drawn from the current operating budget. --- ### City receives clean 2025 audit, addresses unsecured funds WELLINGTON, Kan. — An independent auditor presented an unmodified opinion on the city's 2025 financials, reporting that Wellington had more than $24.5 million in unencumbered cash at the end of the year. Sean Gordon of Gordon CPA in Lawrence noted a potential compliance issue: the city, the Wellington Public Library and the Health Care Authority all temporarily exceeded the $250,000 Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. insurance limit at year's end, reportedly leaving some bank deposits unsecured. Concerns were raised during the meeting over the Health Care Authority's unsecured funds. City Manager Jeff Porter clarified that while the entities fall under the city's umbrella, they operate independently and make their own depository decisions, though he assured the council that the city will remind the boards to monitor compliance. --- ### High costs stall potential dredging of the bay WELLINGTON, Kan. — Dredging the bay at Woods Park remains financially unfeasible for the city at this time. In response to questions from the council about the dry, silty bay, city staff reported that engineering firm Professional Engineering Consultants estimated dredging costs would start at $150,000\. Potential complications — such as repairing a clay liner, obtaining permits from multiple state and federal agencies and paying disposal fees for fertilizer-contaminated silt — could drive costs significantly higher. The city's internal equipment is too small for the job, and no funds are slated for the Woods Park Dam until 2027. --- ### Cowley College Sumner Campus reports enrollment increase WELLINGTON, Kan. — Cowley College Sumner Campus Director Zach Cooper announced that current enrollment is tracking higher than at this time last year as in-person classes begin. Cooper also updated the council on upcoming campus programs, including Golden Tiger enrollment for residents age 50 and older, which features diverse classes ranging from woodworking to global bread-making. Additionally, the college will partner with Kansas State University Research and Extension to host a Master Gardener informational meeting in preparation for a fall certification class. --- ### Audience member ejected over meeting decorum WELLINGTON, Kan. — Following a vote on a property compliance issue, an audience member was ejected from the council chambers for being out of order.
