# Democrats Flip Seven Seats to Win Senate Control

Democrats won control of the Senate in the Nov. 3 midterm elections after flipping seven Republican-held seats, NBC News projected. Roy Cooper won North Carolina, Sherrod Brown defeated Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio, Josh Turek won Iowa and Troy Jackson unseated Sen. Susan Collins in Maine. James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton in Texas, Adam Hamilton unseated Sen. Roger Marshall in Kansas and Annie Andrews defeated Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina. The victories gave Democrats their first Senate win in Texas since 1988 and their first in Kansas since 1932\. Alaska remained uncalled early Wednesday, while Nebraska Republican Pete Ricketts claimed victory with a Decision Desk HQ projection but no Associated Press call. The new majority will give Democrats control of the Senate’s agenda and authority to approve or reject President Donald Trump’s judicial and Cabinet nominees during his final two years in office.

# Democrats Win House, Putting Jeffries in Line for Speaker

Democrats won control of the House in Tuesday’s midterm elections, NBC News and CBS News projected, ending the Republican majority led by Speaker Mike Johnson. All 435 seats were on the ballot, and Democrats needed a net gain of three to take the majority. NBC projected about 255 Democratic seats, although counting continued and the final size of the majority remained uncertain. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York is expected to become speaker when Congress convenes in January, but he must first win a vote of the full House. The election followed a redistricting contest that began when Texas Republicans redrew their map at Trump’s urging in 2025 and California voters approved a Democratic-drawn map in response. The majority will give Democrats the ability to block Trump’s legislation, shape government funding and issue subpoenas in investigations of his administration.

# GOP Redistricting Fails to Protect House Majority

Republicans’ mid-decade redistricting push failed to preserve their House majority, with Texas delivering a net Republican loss of one seat instead of the five-seat gain the party sought. At Trump’s urging, Texas Republicans had redrawn five Democratic-held districts into seats he would have carried by at least 10 percentage points in 2024\. Republicans won only one of those five targets and lost two seats they previously held, leaving them with 24 of Texas’ 38 seats, the Texas Tribune reported. Democrats also won redrawn seats in Florida and retained targeted districts in North Carolina and Alabama, according to AP race calls reported by NPR. In California, where Democrats adopted their own new map in response, the party had flipped three targeted seats and led in two others, the Tribune reported.

# Hinojosa Ousts Abbott as Democrats Flip Four Governorships

Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated three-term Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in Texas on Tuesday, with AP and CBS News projecting her victory and Abbott conceding. The Austin state representative will become Texas’ first Latina governor and its first Democrat elected to the office since Ann Richards in 1990\. Democrats also won Republican-held governorships in Georgia, where Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Rick Jackson; Ohio, where Amy Acton defeated Vivek Ramaswamy; and Iowa, where Rob Sand defeated Zach Lahn. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine were barred by term limits from running again, while Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds chose not to seek reelection. Abbott said he had congratulated Hinojosa and would assist her transition before she takes office in January. The victories expand Democrats’ authority over abortion, voting and congressional maps, with current election calls putting the party on track to govern states totaling 380 electoral votes on the 2028 presidential map.

# Data Center Limits Lead in 39 of 40 Reported Measures

Restrictions on data centers led in 39 of 40 Nov. 3 ballot measures with reported votes in Redbud Consulting’s [Data Centers on the Ballot](https://datacentersontheballot.com/?ref=citizenjournal.us) tracker as of 5:56 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Nov. 4\. The tracker covered 45 measures, with five still awaiting results. The questions included bans, zoning decisions, development agreements and advisory measures, so their legal effects varied. Hubbard, Ohio, recorded 76.6% support for banning data centers, while Harwood, North Dakota, rejected additional review requirements for large industrial projects with 75.6% opposed. Binding measures can block projects or change approval requirements, while advisory votes convey local preferences without directly changing the rules. The counts remain unofficial, and the tracker combines completed and partial returns from individual communities rather than a nationwide referendum.

# November 4, 1979: Iran Hostage Crisis Begins After U.S. Embassy in Tehran Is Stormed

On this day, radical student followers of Ayatollah Khomeini stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran, and seized 90 hostages, enraged that the exiled Shah had been admitted to the United States for medical treatment. While many captives were later released, 52 Americans remained in captivity for 444 days, creating a prolonged international crisis that crippled President Jimmy Carter’s administration.
