# AI Debt Fears Sent Market Down in Its Worst Week Since June

The Nasdaq Composite fell 4.5%, or 1,226.14 points, for the week ending Oct. 16, its worst week since June, as concerns about debt-financed artificial intelligence spending drove technology shares lower. CoreWeave, which rents AI computing capacity and carries more than $51 billion in debt, lost about 25% for the week as the cost of insuring its debt against default rose. Its chief executive said the market was misreading the company and that its order backlog supported its borrowing. Higher oil prices and hotter-than-expected September inflation added pressure, while investors shifted toward health care, consumer staples and other industries less tied to AI. With AI spending helping drive market gains and business investment over the past two years, doubts about its returns could affect retirement portfolios and corporate hiring.

# U.S. Says Blockade Denies Iran $25 Billion in Oil Sales

Adm. Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, said Oct. 16 that the American naval blockade of Iranian ports had prevented at least $25 billion in crude oil exports. He also said U.S. forces helped partner agencies freeze nearly $350 million in Iranian cryptocurrency, figures that have not been independently verified. Washington reinstated the blockade in mid-July, saying it would be lifted only if Iran stopped attacking ships in and around the Strait of Hormuz. On Oct. 18, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated an offer to reopen the strait on the sixth day and begin talks on the seventh if Washington lifts the blockade, waives oil sanctions and observes a ceasefire that includes Lebanon. President Donald Trump rejected that proposal in late September, and U.S. officials insist that negotiations address Iran’s nuclear program. Kpler data show Gulf crude exports recovered to about 91% of prewar levels in September, but restrictions by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi-linked shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb strait and attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure continue to threaten supplies and help keep oil prices high.

# No Kings Organizers Turn Protests Into Early-Voting Drives

The anti-Trump No Kings coalition held more than 2,500 early-voting events nationwide Oct. 17, aiming to translate opposition to the president into turnout before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Events ranged from marches and rallies to block parties and cookouts intended to steer participants toward voting centers. Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin said the focus had shifted from sending a protest message to getting people to vote. Organizers estimated that about 5,000 people attended a rally at The Commons park in Minneapolis, while no reliable national attendance count was available. The mobilization came 17 days before elections that will decide control of the House and Senate, as President Donald Trump held a Northern Kentucky rally supporting Republican candidates.

# Databricks CEO Challenges Claims of AI Self-Improvement

Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi challenged claims that artificial intelligence is entering a cycle of accelerating self-improvement during a Sept. 18 interview on The a16z Show. Under his proposed test, each new generation would need fewer graphics processing units, take less time to train and deliver greater accuracy. Those improvements would have to recur across generations to demonstrate that AI development is accelerating while using fewer resources, he said. Ghodsi said he saw no evidence that those conditions were being met, describing frontier training runs as slower, more brittle and more expensive. Hosts Martin Casado and Sarah Wang, partners at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, estimated that the minimum computing cost for a frontier model had risen from roughly $100 million toward $5 billion to $10 billion.

# Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Sites as Putin Seeks Summit With Trump and Xi

Ukraine attacked Russian oil facilities overnight into Oct. 18, setting fires at St. Petersburg’s oil export terminal and a nearby depot, the Associated Press reported. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted 1,015 drones, and St. Petersburg’s governor reported one death and five injuries. President Donald Trump accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of not wanting to end the war, while Zelenskyy warned that Washington siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be a “historic mistake.” Russia also struck nine Ukrainian regions Oct. 16, causing emergency power outages for hundreds of thousands of households, Ukrainian officials said. Separately, Putin has proposed a November summit with Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to discuss ending the war, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions. The proposed talks would exclude Zelenskyy as disputes over sanctions and military satellite access strain Ukraine’s ties with Washington, a key source of weapons and intelligence.

On this day in 1781, British General Lord Cornwallis surrendered more than 8,000 British soldiers and seamen at Yorktown, Virginia, to combined American and French forces.
