# Wars Push Oil Above $106 as Diesel Stays Near Record

Brent crude rose 1.8% to $106.65 a barrel Monday, Oct. 12, with recent AAA figures putting diesel at about $6.23 to $6.30 a gallon. Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and the U.S.-Iran war’s disruption of the Strait of Hormuz have tightened fuel supplies, keeping pressure on transportation costs three weeks before the Nov. 3 midterms. Seeking relief, the Treasury Department on Oct. 9 authorized Russian diesel sales, shipments and imports through April 7, 2027, following President Donald Trump’s supply agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said Saturday, “I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” before announcing an energy ceasefire that Moscow declined to confirm Monday and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had violated. Middle East tensions also weighed on oil markets after a Saturday strike on Riyadh’s airport killed at least 12 people, including an American, and Washington blamed Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis. Trump was considering joining Saudi strikes against the Houthis, potentially opening another combat front for American forces, while analysts said damage to Russian refineries would limit near-term relief from the diesel deal.

# Federal Agents Search Omar’s Home

Homeland Security Investigations agents searched the Washington-area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., on Monday, Oct. 12, under a court-authorized warrant in what the Justice Department called an ongoing criminal investigation. The department did not disclose the investigation’s focus, but people familiar with the case told ABC News it concerned her immigration paperwork. White House border adviser Tom Homan alleged that Omar misrepresented herself when obtaining citizenship and said she could lose it through court proceedings if the allegations were proved. Trump said he had nothing to do with the search, while Omar denied wrongdoing and described the action as political intimidation. House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar questioned whether federal law enforcement was being used against the president’s opponents. No charges had been announced as of Monday, leaving the allegations unresolved as Omar seeks re-election in the Nov. 3 midterms.

# Justice Department Probes TV Networks Over Coverage Pause

The Justice Department is investigating whether ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC violated antitrust law by jointly suspending pooled coverage of Trump, sending document demands to the networks Friday, Oct. 9, according to a department official. The networks halted the shared coverage on Sept. 21 after the White House barred reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico. Under the pool system, networks share cameras and crews that supply presidential footage to other outlets. A department spokesperson said coordinated boycotts by commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act, while press-freedom groups said the investigation threatened editorial independence. The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press called the probe a pretext for obtaining network records, highlighting the dispute over government scrutiny of coverage decisions. Judge Timothy Kelly has extended a temporary order restoring the barred outlets’ access, although the White House has continued excluding CNN and Politico from the Oval Office and Air Force One.

# SpaceX’s Cellphone Push Sends Wireless Stocks Plunging

Shares of AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile plunged Friday, Oct. 9, after SpaceX announced a deal to buy nationwide wireless spectrum from Grain Management to help its Starlink network become a major mobile carrier. T-Mobile fell 13.3%, AT&T 9.8% and Verizon 8.75%, marking Verizon’s worst day since July 2002\. The deal covers up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band, whose signals travel long distances and penetrate buildings. The Wall Street Journal reported an $8 billion cash price, although SpaceX did not disclose the financial terms. The purchase requires Federal Communications Commission approval, and SpaceX did not announce a launch date for phone service. The move could increase competition in the wireless market, but analysts told Light Reading that SpaceX would likely still need an agreement to use an existing carrier’s network to compete fully.

# Economic Nobel Prize Honors Models That Guide Crisis Policy

Americans Robert E. Hall of Stanford University and Michael Woodford of Columbia University won the 2026 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences on Monday, Oct. 12, for research on stabilizing economies. Their models begin with decisions made by households and businesses and help governments and central banks assess responses to recessions, energy shocks and inflation. Woodford’s 2003 book “Interest and Prices” developed a framework for analyzing how interest rates influence economic output and prices. Hall’s research examined how expectations shape household spending and how job searches and wages that adjust slowly contribute to unemployment during downturns. The Nobel committee said their work helped rebuild economic models after the oil crises of the 1970s exposed weaknesses in earlier approaches. Those models now inform policy decisions affecting borrowing costs and jobs, and the prize will be presented Dec. 10.
