The Canadian list spans steel, appliances and farm equipment as well as seafood, cheese, clothing, cosmetics and toilet paper. Prime Minister Mark Carney paired the tariffs with 7.5 billion Canadian dollars, or about $5.4 billion, in support for affected workers and businesses. The escalation follows a failed first review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement after the United States declined July 1 to join Canada and Mexico in renewing the pact for another 16-year term. Although the agreement remains in force through 2036, Washington has imposed tariffs on some goods that qualify for duty-free treatment as it seeks concessions on dairy, auto content rules and Chinese transshipment. Canada's response deepens uncertainty over whether the pact will be renegotiated or weakened, with the dispute threatening higher prices and integrated North American supply chains in autos, energy, agriculture and lumber. The law bars state and local agencies from entering 287(g) agreements, which allow local officers to perform certain civil immigration duties for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and prevents local jails from holding people at ICE's request. Attorney General Letitia James also subpoenaed four sheriff's offices and the Nassau County Police Department over alleged noncompliance, while the Broome County Sheriff's Office ended its ICE agreement rather than contest the law. Gov. Kathy Hochul cited an Aug. 3 federal court order that blocked the statute's separate ban on masked and unidentified federal agents but left the 287(g) prohibition intact. The case could influence whether other states may restrict county participation in a federal program that expands immigration-enforcement capacity. Jeff Landry announced Aug. 25 that the company intends to invest up to $100 billion in a Starship launch campus on about 125,000 to 130,000 acres of former Exxon coastal marsh near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish. Plans for the site, called Starbase Louisiana, include five launch complexes with two pads each, propellant facilities, power generation, vehicle-processing buildings and employee housing. Louisiana Economic Development projects about 3,000 direct jobs over 10 years with an average salary of $92,600, along with more than 8,100 indirect jobs. The project remains an announcement and incentive package rather than a groundbreaking, with construction planned for 2027, a first launch targeted no earlier than 2029, and environmental permits and federal launch licenses still required. If completed, the site could expand launch capacity for Starlink satellites, national-security payloads and NASA's Artemis lunar program beyond SpaceX's existing pads. The agencies involved have not publicly confirmed the estimates or the assertion that the losses exceed any previous damage sustained by U.S. spy agencies. NBC News / Political Wire / The Intercept / Britannica --- # Dolly Parton Dies at 80 After Defining Country Music Dolly Parton died Aug. 25 at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville after what her publicist described as a brief battle with cancer, her nephew Brian Seaver announced in a video posted to her Instagram account. The 80-year-old Sevier County, Tennessee, native wrote and recorded "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors" and "9 to 5," and wrote "I Will Always Love You," which became one of the best-selling singles ever recorded after Whitney Houston released her version in 1992\. Parton also built Dollywood in her home county and founded the Imagination Library, which mails free books to young children. Her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in 2025, and she dedicated one of her final songs, "If You Hadn't Been There," to him. Tributes from music, politics and sports reflected the unusually broad following she built through her songs, philanthropy and rise from Appalachian poverty to ownership of a business empire.
