# Cooling Inflation Sends Stocks to Records

Stocks closed at record highs Thursday after new data showed inflation pressures easing and reduced expectations that the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates in September. The S&P 500 gained 0.65% to close at 7,798.99 after crossing 7,800 during the session, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.81% to 26,803.03 and the Dow added 69.72 points to 53,839.99\. The rally followed a Labor Department report showing wholesale prices were flat in July, compared with forecasts for a 0.2% monthly increase, though they remained 4.7% higher than a year earlier. Consumer prices rose 0.1% in July and 3.4% from a year earlier, while Brent and U.S. crude oil prices fell more than 2%. Futures markets put the chance of a September rate increase at about 34%, down from roughly 55% a week earlier. Together, the final major inflation reports before the Fed meeting strengthened investors’ expectations that policymakers can leave rates unchanged.

# Trump Tariffs Target Chinese Drone Dominance

President Donald Trump announced tiered tariffs Thursday on imported drones and their components, saying heavy reliance on foreign production, particularly from China, poses a national-security threat. The White House said the program would protect the U.S. defense and defense-adjacent industrial base while expanding domestic production and creating jobs. Larger drones with militarily sensitive capabilities such as thermal imaging, along with certain critical components, will face a 100% tariff based on their value, while smaller drones and components will face a 25% levy. Qualifying products from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan will be taxed at 15%, while those from the United Kingdom will face a 10% duty if nearly all their hardware, software and technology originate in those countries or the United States. The differing rates are intended to counter China’s dominance of the commercial drone market, move production to the United States and favor allied suppliers ahead of an expected Sept. 24 meeting between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

# Three-State Execution Day Follows 16-Year High

The United States carried out three executions in three states Thursday, the first time that many people were put to death on the same day since 2010\. The executions followed 47 nationwide in 2025, the highest annual total in 16 years after a long-term decline in the use of capital punishment. Oklahoma executed Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez for the 2003 killing of his girlfriend, Olimpia Fisher. About half an hour later, Tennessee executed Anthony Darrell Hines for the 1985 stabbing death of motel worker Catherine Jean Jenkins. Alabama executed Jeremy Williams hours later for the 2021 rape and murder of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland after he pleaded guilty, declined to appeal and asked for his sentence to be carried out. Because states set execution dates independently through their own courts and governors, the three cases reflected the growing number of executions rather than a coordinated schedule.

# China’s Car Export Boom Overwhelms Shipping Fleet

China’s surging car exports are straining the global shipping industry as specialized vehicle carriers remain booked years in advance. Charter rates for the ships, which function like floating parking garages, have risen 65% this year as manufacturers compete for scarce capacity. Fierce competition among more than 100 Chinese auto brands, excess production and weak domestic demand are pushing automakers to send more vehicles to Europe, Australia and Latin America, with some cars packed into standard shipping containers. Carriers have expanded the global vehicle-carrier fleet by about 40% and placed record numbers of ship orders, but Wallenius Wilhelmsen Chief Executive Lasse Kristoffersen said capacity still cannot keep pace with China’s needs. Research group Mobility Global forecasts that China could export as many as 10 million cars and vans this year, up from just under 600,000 in 2019, making shipping capacity a critical constraint on the country’s expansion into foreign auto markets.

# U.S. Bets Tanker Flows Can Hold Oil Below $90

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday that the U.S. Navy could maintain its blockade of Iranian ports indefinitely by rotating ships, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent promised additional economic measures the following week. Axios national political reporter Marc Caputo said on the 2WAY Tonight podcast that administration officials increasingly believe five very large crude carriers could move through the Strait of Hormuz each day. At roughly 2 million barrels per tanker, that would move about 10 million barrels daily, while pipelines to the Red Sea could carry an additional 6 million barrels. Caputo said officials view that combined flow as leaving the market about 4 million barrels a day, or roughly 4% of global supply, below normal levels while buying time to find other supplies and keeping oil below $90 a barrel. He said he did not believe five such ships had passed through the strait in a single day, though Energy Secretary Chris Wright had said on social media that 10 million barrels were moving through. With ship-tracking data showing only three vessel transits in the 24 hours ending Aug. 12, compared with more than 130 a day before the war, the administration’s price strategy depends on sustaining flows that had not yet been demonstrated.

# AUGUST 14, 1935: FDR SIGNS SOCIAL SECURITY ACT

On this day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, creating a federal system of unemployment insurance, old-age pensions and aid for vulnerable Americans during the Great Depression. The landmark New Deal law established a permanent social safety net that still provides income support to retirees, disabled workers and survivors today.
