# Community, Technical Colleges Lose Students as Kansas Universities Grow

TOPEKA, Kan. — Despite state efforts to expand career training, Kansas community college enrollment declined 1.9% and technical college enrollment fell 6.8% this fall, while enrollment at the state’s six public universities rose 0.7%, according to Sept. 30 figures from the Kansas Board of Regents. Systemwide enrollment declined 0.8% from a year earlier, a result Regents Chair Alysia Johnston described as flat after three years of growth, with uneven results among sectors and institutions. Emporia State enrollment rose 6%, Fort Hays State 4%, Kansas State 0.3% and the University of Kansas’ Lawrence and Edwards campuses 0.5%; Wichita State enrollment fell 2.5% and Pittsburg State 0.6%. KU’s enrollment across all campuses rose 0.9% to a record 31,464 students, setting a new high for the third consecutive year, the university said. The community and technical college declines affect schools that train much of Kansas’ skilled workforce, including nurses, welders and aviation maintenance technicians, as national projections have long anticipated high school graduates peaking around 2025 before declining. Enrollment also shapes tuition revenue at a time when Fort Hays State attributes its natural history museum’s public closure to a $2.4 million cut by the 2026 Legislature.

# Textron Launches Paid Aviation Apprenticeships for Teens

WICHITA, Kan. — Textron Aviation announced Sept. 30 that it has launched three state-registered, paid apprenticeship programs for high school students 16 and older, which the company says are Kansas’ first aviation youth apprenticeships. Two programs partner with WSU Tech in Wichita: airframe and powerplant mechanics, the federal certification for aircraft maintenance technicians, and avionics, the electronic systems aboard aircraft. The third, engine buildup, operates at Textron’s Independence facility in partnership with Tri County Tech in Bartlesville, Okla. Students combine classroom instruction with on-the-job training at Textron facilities for up to three years and earn a state-recognized apprenticeship credential. The first groups began this fall. Textron, which builds Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft and is one of Wichita’s largest manufacturing employers, gains a recruiting path from high schools as south-central Kansas aerospace manufacturers compete for skilled workers.

# FHSU Foundation Seeks $855,000 to Save Sternberg

HAYS, Kan. — The Fort Hays State University Foundation has opened a “Save Sternberg” fund seeking at least $855,000 by Dec. 31 to help keep the Sternberg Museum of Natural History operating, Hays Post reported Sept. 30\. The roughly 13-week drive follows President Tisa Mason’s Sept. 28 announcement that the museum will permanently close to the public Dec. 18 because of a $2.4 million cut in the university’s state funding. The goal nearly matches the university’s $855,990 subsidy to the museum last year, while the building also needs about $20 million in deferred maintenance. Hays Post reported $30,580 raised as of the morning of Sept. 30, a total that continues to change. The foundation said donations will support Sternberg’s collections and educational mission if the goal is not met, but it has not said reaching the target would reverse the public closure. The campaign seeks private support for a western Kansas museum whose public operations are threatened by reduced state funding.

# Kansas Wheat Harvest Drops 42%

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas farmers harvested 200.6 million bushels of wheat in 2026, down 42% from 2025, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual Small Grains Summary released Sept. 30\. Average yield fell from 51 to 34 bushels per acre after a spring when extreme drought spread across northwest and far southwest Kansas and severe drought expanded across central Kansas. USDA’s companion Grain Stocks report put Kansas wheat inventories on Sept. 1 at 312.8 million bushels, down about 25% from 417.4 million a year earlier. National wheat stocks fell 14% to 1.85 billion bushels. The smaller harvest in the nation’s traditional leading winter wheat state has implications for grain elevators, rail shippers, flour mills and rural communities dependent on farm income. The end-of-season estimate arrives as farmers plant next year’s wheat following a hot, dry July and August, with this week’s rain providing moisture for planting.

# Polo Remnants Bring Tornado Reports, Flooding to Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. — Storms drawing moisture from Pacific Hurricane Polo’s remnants generated 15 tornado reports in Kansas by 8 p.m. Sept. 30, according to National Weather Service figures cited by KSN. Weather service warnings described tornadoes confirmed by spotters or radar near Ash Valley in Pawnee County in the late afternoon, followed in the early evening by Dorrance and Lucas in Russell County and areas around Wilson Lake, mostly over rural land. Western Kansas had received 1 to 4 inches of rain, prompting the weather service’s Goodland office to issue flood warnings for counties including Sheridan, Thomas, Gove and Logan, where the emergency manager reported water over several roads. Initial coverage reported no deaths, injuries or major property damage, and damage surveys to establish the number and strength of tornadoes were still pending. Forecasters expected more heavy rain Thursday, Oct. 1, with KCTV5 warning of flood risk in the Kansas City area through Thursday. The rainfall provides moisture for wheat planting after a hot, dry late summer but increases flood risk on saturated ground, while the tornado activity comes at a time of year when such storms are far less common than in spring.
