The 6 p.m. hearing at the county fairgrounds Administration Building, 405 W. Fourth St., drew about 1,100 attendees, KSHB reported, with three minutes allotted per speaker; the Tonganoxie Mirror reported a planned capacity of 750 and only 200 chairs, leaving standing room for other attendees. Cloverleaf Infrastructure resubmitted its proposal for roughly 1,000 acres south of Tonganoxie after the county's temporary data center moratorium expired in August, expanding the footprint, roughly doubling projected electricity demand to as much as 1.2 gigawatts — comparable to a large power plant's output — and adding an on-site gas-fired generating plant. The site is near Tonganoxie Business Park and about 1 to 1.5 miles from the town's elementary school, middle school and a nursing home. Citizens Against Bluestem members have raised concerns about noise, air quality, water consumption and electricity demand and say they have retained an attorney. The resulting advisory instructed about 500,000 people to boil tap water before drinking, cooking or brushing teeth because pressure loss can allow contamination, covering Wichita, Derby, Park City, Valley Center, Bel Aire, Kechi, Rose Hill, Benton, three Sedgwick County rural water districts and McConnell Air Force Base. The Kansas Board of Regents commissioned the survey with Fort Hays State University, contacting about 3,200 businesses and receiving more than 230 responses across nearly 20 industries. Manufacturing accounted for the largest group of respondents, followed by health care, agriculture and construction. Regents approved a reduced-credit degree pilot June 18 after examining the idea since September 2025, with the survey intended to assess whether employers would discount shorter degrees. The responses measure employer opinion rather than hiring commitments or a policy change, and proposed degrees still must qualify under the pilot. Shorter programs could reduce tuition costs and allow students to enter the workforce sooner while giving Kansas universities another enrollment option as they face a shrinking college-age population. Reuters reported that state-owned firms including COFCO and Sinograin, which can obtain tariff waivers on U.S. cargoes, made most of the purchases ahead of a planned summit between the two governments.
