At the FBI field office with Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel, officials described Operation No Doze cases involving about $245 million in intended losses, and Vance announced federal loan suspensions affecting 870,000 people flagged for suspected fraud, with a process to challenge those findings. The workers largely came from Spirit AeroSystems, which Boeing reacquired in 2025 after selling its Wichita commercial operations to private equity firm Onex in 2005\. The union says the spinoff put workers hired by the successor company on a separate local contract and cut wages by 10% to 15%, while District 70 remained in the master agreement’s text. Rejoining would address the contract separation that has divided Wichita workers from their Pacific Northwest counterparts for more than two decades in an industry central to Wichita’s economy. The vote expresses members’ preference rather than an agreement with Boeing, so it does not immediately change pay or contract coverage. The Wichita contract does not expire until 2028, and any change would have to be negotiated with the company. They pointed to falling birth numbers in Finney County, from 804 in 2007-08 to 592 in 2025, meaning smaller groups of children will enter school in the years ahead. The city expects full operations in the second quarter of 2027 after repeated delays, including a design flaw disclosed in January that required repairs to the plant’s clarifiers. Wichita has allotted about six months for staff training in operation and maintenance before fully shifting its water supply from the aging treatment plant, with some training already underway. Janzen said Wichita Water Partners would bear repair costs associated with the delay rather than taxpayers, though the final accounting has not been publicly settled. The project, among Wichita’s largest public works investments and backed in part by a federal water infrastructure loan, is intended to replace a treatment plant at the end of its useful life and improve drinking water reliability.
