Chamber President and CEO Eric Stafford posed the questions and gave each candidate seven minutes to respond. Masterson, the Kansas Senate president from Andover, called property taxes the No. 1 concern he hears statewide and described a neighbor whose property tax bill had grown to more than twice his former total housing payment. Asked how to protect residential customers from data centers' electricity demand, Masterson cited legislation passed two years ago and the Kansas Corporation Commission's large-load tariff, which is intended to make major users pay for added generation and transmission. Holscher, an Overland Park state senator who won the Aug. 4 Democratic primary, has centered her campaign on affordability and taken a more skeptical view of data center incentives. The discussion put two issues confronting Kansas cities and counties — who bears property taxes and data centers' power costs — at the center of the race to choose the governor who will take office in January. Roger Marshall met with Stormont Vail Health executives Friday, Aug. 28, to review rural health spending during what he said was a monthlong tour of roughly 90 Kansas stops. The money comes from the $50.0 billion federal Rural Health Transformation Program, created under Section 71401 of the budget reconciliation law commonly known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and enacted July 4, 2025\. Kansas received approval for $221.9 million in the current federal fiscal year as part of a five-year state plan totaling roughly $1.1 billion and intended to reach all 105 counties. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment awarded about $79.1 million to 39 organizations through regional partnership and rural emergency hospital programs, then separately awarded $1.0 million to seven rural organizations for community health worker programs. Stormont Vail said its PrairieLINK partnership received $5.5 million to extend coordinated health services across 11 rural counties. The five-year effort comes as Kansas continues to lose rural hospitals and obstetrics units, making KDHE's early funding decisions important to the availability of small-town care into the 2030s. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died, and police are investigating the death as a homicide. As of the department's latest public statement, no arrest had been announced, the suspect remained at large and the victim's name was being withheld pending notification of relatives. Investigators asked downtown businesses with exterior cameras and other witnesses to call dispatch at 785-843-0250 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County at 785-843-8477\. The 700 block of Massachusetts Street is at the center of the city's downtown bar and restaurant district near the University of Kansas, where late-night crowds are typically heavier during the opening weeks of the fall semester. Because the investigation remains open and public information is limited to initial police statements, the sequence of events could change as detectives gather evidence in one of Douglas County's busiest nightlife areas. The Lawrence Times · KCTV5 · KSHB 41 --- # Wichita Orpheum Reopens After $13.0 Million Restoration WICHITA, Kan. — The Orpheum Theatre reopened Sunday, Aug. 30, after a $13.0 million restoration, with a solo piano concert by 13-time Grammy winner John Legend billed to mark the historic hall's return. The theater closed in June 2025 for the roughly 15-month project, which added accessible seating, an air-conditioned balcony and portable concessions while restoring original paint colors, auditorium star lights and a hand-painted fire curtain. Orpheum officials showed the completed work to reporters before the reopening, and Executive Director Stacee Olden said the community had waited more than 40 years for the unveiling, though post-event coverage confirming how the concert went was not available early Monday. The 1922 theater went dark as a movie house in 1978 and was saved from demolition by a community campaign that helped secure its listing on the National Register of Historic Places; it is the oldest of 17 surviving Orpheum theaters in the United States and the last to be restored. KMUW · KWCH · KSN · KAKE --- # Kansas Heat Advisories Continue Through Monday TOPEKA, Kan. — The National Weather Service kept heat advisories in effect across central, north-central, east-central and northeast Kansas until 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, with heat index values forecast as high as 105 degrees. Topeka reached 102 degrees Sunday, while KWCH reported readings around 105 in the Wichita area and overnight lows forecast only in the upper 70s to low 80s. Forecasts issued Aug. 29 and 30 called for highs in the 100s through Friday, Sept. 4, before temperatures eased into the mid- to upper 90s over Labor Day weekend, though those projections could change. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Kansas crop report for the week ending Aug. 23 rated topsoil moisture 25% very short and 36% short, with 14% of corn in very poor condition and 17% in poor condition. Wichita opened libraries, recreation centers and neighborhood resource centers as cooling centers as consecutive hot nights reduced opportunities for people to recover from daytime heat. The prolonged heat also threatened moisture for filling soybeans and denting corn, increased water needs at feedyards holding 2.26 million cattle as of Aug. 1 and added demand to the electric grid as Kansas schools and fall sports began their opening weeks.
