Reece collapsed Aug. 18 during the first day of football practice at Pawnee Heights High School in Rozel and died that evening; news reports have listed his age as both 16 and 17\. Reece is the fifth Kansas football player to die since 2018, and two of the previous four died of heat stroke, though officials have established neither a cause of death nor heat illness in this case. Jerry Moran announced Thursday that $2 million in federal funding will go to the Kansas Forest Service to strengthen support for local firefighters. Moran, a Republican and senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, secured the money in the fiscal 2026 federal budget for trucks, hand tools, machinery and personal protective equipment. The Manhattan-based state agency equips and trains local and volunteer departments that provide much of rural Kansas' fire protection rather than serving primarily as a direct-response force. The announcement identified neither completed purchases nor the departments that will receive equipment.
