Dozens of residents and Pittsburg State University students objected, citing privacy, inaccurate automated tickets and possible harm to downtown businesses. Commissioners directed the Downtown Advisory Board and city staff to return with alternatives, including a four-hour limit, digital meters and better signs pointing drivers toward about 1,800 spaces in 10 nearby public lots. Authorities identified the victims as Dillon Evans of Parsons, Isabella Kitterman Evans of Caney and their son, Easton Lee. The fire was reported about 1:30 a.m., and the house was fully engulfed and largely destroyed by the time firefighters arrived. All three bodies were found in the ruins. The Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating, and officials have not released a cause or said when the investigation may conclude. Severe storms during the night of Aug. 18 and morning of Aug. 19 brought winds near 70 mph, golf-ball-sized hail, damaged roofs, broken power poles and downed trees across Wyandotte County. About 9,000 homes and businesses remained without power two days after the storm. Gov. Laura Kelly declared a state disaster emergency for the county, making state resources available as crews focus on limbs, branches and trees piled along streets.
