# Hamilton Opens Senate Campaign Against Marshall

LEBANON, Kan. — Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Adam Hamilton launched his first general election television ad Tuesday, Aug. 18, after winning an 11-candidate primary Aug. 4\. The United Methodist pastor filmed the ad in Lebanon, the geographic center of the contiguous United States, and bought airtime in the Wichita and Topeka markets. The spot presents Kansans as politically moderate as Hamilton begins a campaign expected to focus on health care, the cost of living and President Donald Trump. Hamilton faces incumbent Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in the Nov. 3 general election, while national handicappers shifted the race Aug. 7 from safe Republican to likely Republican, a rating that still favors Marshall. The launch establishes Hamilton's opening general election message in a state that has not elected a Democratic U.S. senator since 1932.

# Kansas Awards $61 Million for Transportation Projects

TOPEKA, Kan. — Gov. Laura Kelly and the Kansas Department of Transportation announced more than $61 million for road, sidewalk, bicycle and trail projects across Kansas on Monday and Tuesday. The state awarded $24.1 million to 32 City Connecting Link Improvement Program projects for segments of state highway that run through towns as city streets and are maintained by municipalities. The fiscal years 2028 and 2029 awards cover surface preservation, pavement restoration and geometric improvements, with nearly $7 million in additional federal funding and local matches bringing that group’s total value to about $33 million. KDOT also awarded $37.2 million in federal Transportation Alternatives funding to 33 of 40 applicants, added $6 million from the Highway Safety Improvement Program. The awards commit money to construction after Kelly’s term ends in January 2027, though the figures are not final project costs, and KDOT said it does not expect another Transportation Alternatives application round until spring 2028.

# Wichita Biomedical Campus Adds Signs Ahead of Opening

WICHITA, Kan. — Crews installed University of Kansas and Wichita State University logos Aug. 16 on the exterior of the roughly $300 million Wichita Biomedical Campus, marking one of the project’s last visible construction milestones. The joint campus will house the Wichita locations of the KU schools of medicine and pharmacy, along with health professions programs from Wichita State and WSU Tech, and is expected to serve about 3,000 students. Classes are scheduled to begin in spring 2027, following placement of the final structural beam in August 2025 on roughly the timeline announced at the groundbreaking. The campus is intended to bring medical, pharmacy, nursing and allied health students together in hopes that more graduates will practice in Kansas, where workforce shortages are particularly severe outside metropolitan areas. That goal carries added weight as Kansas has more rural hospitals considered at immediate risk of closure than any other state, though the campus’s effect on staffing will emerge only after students graduate and enter the workforce.

# Police Seize 81 Dogs From Kansas City Home

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Police and Kansas City, Kansas, Animal Services removed 81 dogs from a home in the 2200 block of Lafayette Avenue after officers responding Saturday to a report of aggressive dogs fighting found more animals inside. Officials described dogs of all ages as emaciated, with matted fur caked in feces and urine, while volunteers reported animal waste at least 6 inches deep inside the home. Two people were booked into the Wyandotte County Jail, including the dogs’ owner on outstanding warrants and a man on a trespassing allegation, but police had announced no animal cruelty charges as of Tuesday, Aug. 18\. Pawsitive Tales, the Heart of America Humane Society, Great Plains SPCA and Melissa’s Second Chances helped process, bathe and vaccinate the animals; about half went to outreach partners, while the rest remained with Animal Services. Officials described the case as one of the Unified Government division’s largest single-address animal removals, leaving shelters to care for and place the dogs as investigators determine whether additional charges are warranted.

# Kansas Topsoil Moisture Shortage Reaches 60%

TOPEKA, Kan. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that 60% of Kansas topsoil was short or very short of moisture for the week ending Aug. 16, including 25% rated very short and 35% rated short. The combined figure rose from about 54% two weeks earlier. Kansas corn was rated 29% poor or very poor and 42% good or excellent, soybeans were 54% good or excellent, and grain sorghum, which is concentrated in western Kansas, was 33% poor or very poor and 27% good or excellent. Corn development ran ahead of average, with 41% dented and 8% mature, compared with five-year averages of 34% and 4%, respectively, a pace that can indicate plants are ending grain development early. The weekly ratings are survey estimates rather than harvested yields and could improve with rain before harvest. Another weak crop year would deepen pressure on farmers, grain elevators and rural businesses after Kansas produced one of its smallest modern winter wheat harvests, at about 194 million bushels.
