# Kansas GOP Governor Candidates Trade Jabs in Primary Debate

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Four Republican candidates for governor met Friday at Johnson County Community College in a Kansas Republican Party–hosted forum billed as Debate Night in Kansas. Secretary of State Scott Schwab, Johnson County businessman Philip Sarnecki, former state Rep. Charlotte O'Hara and Senate President Ty Masterson sparred over the issues and one another's positions, with the Kansas Reflector reporting that three of them traded personal attacks. Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt and two other contenders declined to participate after refusing to pay a $10,000 entry fee, saying the state party should remain neutral during the primary. The Republican primary is set for Aug. 4, 2026.

# Kansas Wheat Harvest Faces Up to 20% Yield Loss

WICHITA, Kan. — Kansas wheat producers entering the 2026 harvest report yield losses of up to 20% caused by drought and late-spring freezes, with test cutting now underway across the state. The May Wheat Quality Council tour projected a state crop of 218 million bushels, averaging 38.9 bushels per acre. The latest USDA-NASS Kansas report shows the crop 99% headed and 79% coloring, with only 15% rated good-to-excellent and 55% rated poor-to-very-poor. Recent rains stabilized stressed fields but slowed early cutting in south-central Kansas.

# Flooding Prompts Northeast Kansas Disaster Declaration

TOPEKA, Kan. — Gov. Laura Kelly issued a verbal State of Disaster Emergency at 7:31 p.m. June 4 after heavy rainfall produced widespread flooding across northeast Kansas, formalizing the proclamation the following day. The declaration activates state response resources for road closures, water rescues and debris removal across Riley, Jackson and surrounding counties. The National Weather Service office in Topeka rated the tornado that struck Riley County on June 4 as an EF2, with the funnel touching down about a mile northeast of Riley at 5:13 p.m. and remaining on the ground roughly 10 minutes. At least five structures were damaged, four on the east side of Riley and one near Randolph. Flooding closed Falcon Road, a stretch of U.S. 77 from Indian Hill Road to the Marshall County line, the Blue River Hills low-water crossing and a section of U.S. 75, with several state highways still shut Friday morning.

# Kansas Supreme Court Upholds Lenexa Rape, Kidnapping Convictions

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Supreme Court on June 5 affirmed Anthony D. Allen's convictions on one count of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of rape. The ruling reversed a 2022 Court of Appeals decision that had thrown out the verdicts over a faulty waiver of counsel. A Johnson County District Court had sentenced Allen to 331 months — 27 years and six months — after he held a woman hostage in her Lenexa apartment for several months. The majority found that the counsel-waiver errors did not require vacating the convictions.
