# McPherson Gym Owner Launches Weekly Fitness Video Column

A McPherson gym owner is expanding her reach statewide with weekly fitness video columns designed to help Kansans of all ages stay active. Shelly Prescott, who holds a Master of Science in Health & Human Performance and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, will provide fitness and nutrition tips through her weekly videos. Prescott's online training approach has already gained praise from clients who appreciate the flexibility of mobile-accessible workouts.

# KU Plans WWI Memorial Stadium Rededication Ceremony

The University of Kansas will rededicate David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium today to honor 130 Jayhawks who died in World War I. The public is invited to a rededication ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 29, taking place on the Garlinghouse Plaza outside the new convention center on the northeast side of the stadium. The new memorial walk features aluminum panels with the names of the 130 KU students and faculty who died, along with select stories of Jayhawk service during the war. The stadium was initially completed in 1922 and dedicated as KU's first WWI memorial on Armistice Day, Nov. 11 that year.

# Toxic Algae Threatens Labor Day Lake Activities

Kansas health officials have issued public health advisories for multiple lakes due to blue-green algae ahead of Labor Day weekend. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae at several Kansas lakes ahead of Labor Day. Depending on the type of exposure, coming into contact with a harmful algae bloom can cause rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headaches. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algae bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

# Dog's Banana Bread Quest Sparks Derby House Fire

A Derby house fire Thursday evening was caused by an unusual culprit seeking a sweet treat. Fire officials in Derby say the house fire was caused by a dog attempting to eat banana bread on the stovetop, accidentally turning on a burner. It happened around 7:06 p.m. in the 2300 block of N Persimmon Street, with crews getting the fire under control quickly. While the banana bread, wrapped in tinfoil, was completely burnt, there was no damage to the house; however, it filled the whole house with smoke.

# Abilene Family Discovers 1973 Time Capsule During Home Renovation

An Abilene family made a remarkable discovery while renovating their home when they found a time capsule hidden in the stairs. Michelle Brown said her father came across a glass jar that held a handwritten note from the original builders, along with a nickel and a penny. The note revealed that the home was built during the fall and winter of 1973, with a construction cost of just $17,000\. Inspired by the find, Brown said she plans to create her own time capsule to place back into the home for future generations to uncover.
