On Monday evenings, when the Kansas heat still hangs over Lindsborg, a handful of people can be found at Coronado Heights sweating out the last of the afternoon.

This is the Sweaty Swedes club. And they keep it fun.

“Sweaty Swedes is a 30-minute circuit exercise group on Coronado Heights. I started it in 2016,” Haley Samford, the founder of Sweaty Swedes, said.

The exercise class that of core workouts, arm windmills, crunches, and walking or running laps on the hill, depending on what a person can do physically. Most of the club’s members have been attending since 2016, including Haley Samford and Lane Allison.

What started as the intention to open a gym in Lindsborg turned into something more: a place to feel at ease and enjoy oneself. The club meets at Coronado Heights, a central location for the widely spread-out attendees, on Mondays at 7 p.m.

“When I started it, I intended to create a customer base to start a gym in Lindsborg. And I realized that it wasn’t ultimately what I wanted to do, but that’s what’s been so fun about it.” Samford said.

Many members came for exercise, but have made friendships and come to socialize in a laid-back setting. The emphasis is on community and social time rather than intense workouts.

2026 is the 11th summer of Sweaty Swedes, with sessions running from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The class encourages all ages and activity levels.

One of the fun ways they work out is by using playing cards to select exercises.

“This was an opportunity for me to make friends. I was pretty recently out of college when I first started. So this was a great opportunity to meet some new people in the area,” Allison said.

The members of the club provide accountability for each other to stay active, even when motivation is low. There are all sorts of activity levels, and it’s flexible for each person.

“I’ve lost steam several times throughout the years, but everyone has kept coming. So I feel like knowing that everyone is up here has kind of kept me active, too, even when I maybe don’t want to be here,” Samford said.

If someone is intimidated by the hill, running or other exercises, they can just walk laps the whole time.

“I think people can be intimidated by the exercise component because this is, by Kansas standards, a pretty large hill. But it is an activity that’s flexible to anyone’s activity level,” Elizabeth Allison, another attendee, said.
