SALINA — The Salina Fire Department responded to more than 160 emergency calls in 36 hours after a severe storm with high winds tore through Saline County Monday night, causing widespread damage and leaving thousands of Evergy customers without power.

The extreme weather triggered a wave of life-safety emergencies across the region, including downed power lines, gas leaks, structure fires, and multi-vehicle semi-truck crashes on Interstate 70 that caused serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

To manage the sustained surge in high-priority alarms, officials ordered off-duty firefighters back to work and deployed mutual aid assistance from Saline County Fire Districts No. 5 and No. 7.
