The Saline County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad was among the agencies that helped remove cattle from an overturned semi-trailer Oct. 13 on Interstate 135 in Harvey County.

The crash occurred at 5:10 a.m. in the southbound lanes at mile marker 33.1, about 0.9 miles north of the Broadway Street exit, according to the [Kansas Highway Patrol crash log](https://www.kansas.gov/khp-crashlogs/search/viewDetail/KHP26OFF013774?ref=citizenjournal.us). KHP said driver Francisco Gomar, 28, of Barker, New York, fell asleep, entered the median and overcorrected, causing the truck and trailer to overturn onto the driver’s side. The crash log listed Gomar as having a suspected serious injury and said he was taken to Newton Medical Center. It also said he was not wearing a safety restraint.

The Saline County squad assisted Newton Fire/EMS, the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, a veterinarian, an animal rescue group and other volunteers during the recovery, according to a [KSAL report citing Newton Fire/EMS](https://www.ksal.com/mounted-patrol-helps-at-crash-scene/?ref=citizenjournal.us). The report did not state how many squad members responded, and no direct comment from the squad was available.

Responders removed all the cattle from the trailer and moved the surviving animals to a local facility, while some cattle died, according to a [KSAL report citing Newton Fire/EMS](https://www.ksal.com/mounted-patrol-helps-at-crash-scene/?ref=citizenjournal.us). Public reports did not specify how many cattle were aboard, how many died, or where the surviving animals were taken.

KSAL reported that a member of the animal rescue group fell from the trailer and was treated and released at a hospital.

At noon Oct. 13, the inside lanes of northbound and southbound I-135 remained closed near mile marker 33, and officials said additional closures could be needed to remove the semi, according to [KWCH reporting based on Harvey County Sheriff’s Office updates](https://www.kwch.com/2026/10/13/cattle-truck-tips-over-harvey-county-crash-traffic-stalled-stretch-i-135/?ref=citizenjournal.us). The report did not state when the lanes fully reopened.
