The Salina City Commission is scheduled to appoint a new commissioner during its Aug. 24 meeting to fill a vacancy left by the July resignation of former Vice Mayor Jerry Ivey. From a pool of 31 applicants, Mayor Michael L. Hoppock and the remaining nonpartisan commissioners will vote on a replacement to serve the remainder of Ivey's term.

The commission is also set to authorize the publication of a notice to exceed the revenue neutral rate, establishing a maximum property tax revenue of $16,880,634 for the 2027 budget. The move would set an estimated mill levy rate of 29.568, with a formal public hearing slated for Sept. 14.

Other major items up for consideration include awarding a contract not to exceed $2,162,767 to Diehl Enterprises Inc. for the city's 2026 water main replacement project and authorizing the $725,000 purchase of property adjacent to the municipal solid waste landfill from the Harold E. Swanson Trust. Commissioners are also scheduled to weigh development agreements providing public financing for the Theatre Salina expansion project at 303 E. Iron Ave., rezone a nearly 4-acre commercial tract near Interstate 70, and approve an ordinance amending city code related to the Salina Public Library.
