Salina Arts Department addresses missing art inventory SALINA, Kan. - The Salina Arts and Humanities Department is updating its collection management policies after a Salina311 report highlighted 34 missing pieces of public art. Department Director Brad Anderson explained during the commission's September meeting that the report, based on an open records request, did not account for the known status of 15 to 20 pieces that were previously damaged, destroyed or stolen. Anderson stated the department is now developing formal collection management guidelines to address inventory records that have not been fully updated, noting that some dispositions predate his tenure by a decade. --- ### 2\. City launches digital archive to track public art collection SALINA, Kan. - Salina is migrating its extensive catalog of public art to the Public Art Archive, a digital database designed to help residents and tourists locate outdoor sculptures and murals. Arts and Humanities staff reported that the city currently hosts around 200 outdoor pieces, including temporary SculptureTour works and Boom murals. Staff and volunteers will continue populating the archive with images and location tags, which will eventually include interior public art collections once the outdoor mapping is complete. --- ### 3\. Public art installations moving forward at Fire Station 4 SALINA, Kan. - New public art installations will soon be visible at Salina's Fire Station 4, with fabrication now complete on the site's main identifier piece designed by Eric Montoy. Installation of the primary structure is expected to begin the week of Sept. 21, while community members recently finished carving 4-by-4-inch clay tiles for a secondary component of the project led by Prairie Works Studio. The larger tiles will cure over the winter, with final installation scheduled for the spring. --- ### 4\. Draft cultural plan to be presented in October SALINA, Kan. - Consultants from Keen Independent Research will present a preliminary draft of Salina's new cultural plan to the Salina City Commission on Oct. 26\. The presentation will serve as a hybrid State of the Arts report, highlighting the economic impact and financial structures of local cultural agencies, including the Smoky Hill River Festival. Arts and Humanities Director Brad Anderson noted that the session will preview major findings and goals before the final plan is brought forward for official adoption in January. --- ### 5\. 'Collective: Our Stories of Cancer' production set for October SALINA, Kan. - The Arts and Humanities Commission highlighted a new collaborative performance exploring the experiences of cancer patients, set to debut Oct. 9 and 10 at Theatre Salina. "Collective: Our Stories of Cancer" features original choreography by the Kansas City-based Owen/Cox Dance Group in collaboration with Gilda's Club Kansas City. The production, funded primarily through private donations, will also include collaborative poetry, live figure drawing and workshops, with tickets priced at $20 and underwriting available for residents facing financial hardship. --- ### 6\. Salina-backed film '4 Days In June' slated for Wichita screenings SALINA, Kan. - The documentary "4 Days In June," which details the inner workings of Salina's Smoky Hill River Festival, will screen at the Salt City Film Festival at Boulevard Theatres in Wichita on Sept. 26\. Arts and Humanities staff encouraged commissioners to attend the showings, noting that director Alicia DeHaan will be present for a question-and-answer session. The regional screenings are designed to test the locally beloved documentary with non-festival audiences in the broader Wichita market. --- ### 7\. Smoky Hill Museum prepares for annual street fair SALINA, Kan. - Salina residents will gather Sept. 26 for the annual Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair, featuring a 10 a.m. parade, a chili cook-off, live music and historical demonstrations. Event organizers announced the street fair is funded by a 50-50 split of public funds and private sponsorships, with the Smoky Hill Museum Friends, Inc. raising nearly $14,000 this year. The event will also feature traditional rope-making demonstrations. --- ### 8\. Salina exceeds expectations in regional music census SALINA, Kan. - Salina recorded 210 responses in the recent Salina Music Census, outperforming similarly sized cities like Manhattan. City staff will travel to Wichita Sept. 25-26 to meet with representatives from 13 other participating communities during the Somewhere Festival & Conference to review the compiled data.
