HAYS, Kan. – Hutchinson Community College freshman Mildred Rono broke her own school record Saturday, Oct. 11, running a 5K time of 16:41.09 to finish second at the FHSU Tiger Open at the Fort Hays State Cross Country Course.

Rono shaved more than eight seconds off her previous Blue Dragon record of 16:49.23, set Sept. 20 at the Missouri Southern Stampede.

The freshman missed her third race victory of the season by 1.16 seconds, finishing behind Iowa Western's Juliana Saket.

The 11th-ranked Blue Dragons did not post a team score with only four runners competing.

Hutchinson had two top-five finishes at the meet. Freshman Ashara Frater placed fifth with a time of 17:55.43, the fifth-fastest 5K time in Blue Dragon history.

Freshmen Evan Ramey finished 50th in 19:42.12, while freshman Kimberlin Lovell placed 55th in 19:59.06\. Both runners posted season-best times in the 8K race.

Colorado School of Mines won the team title with 43 points, followed by Adams State with 58 points.

Hutchinson will compete in the Region 6 Championship on Oct. 24 in Colby.
