MANHATTAN, Kan. — Drivers in Riley County will face stepped-up enforcement of seat belt laws as local police launch the nationwide "Click It or Ticket" campaign to reduce traffic fatalities ahead of the busy Memorial Day weekend. Running from May 17 to June 1, the Riley County Police Department initiative targets unbelted motorists to prevent deadly crash ejections, a preventable outcome that preliminary state transportation data shows is linked to 30% of recent Kansas roadway deaths. Officers will significantly increase their presence on local roads during the 16-day crackdown, reminding all vehicle occupants to properly secure lap and shoulder restraints to avoid a ticket or a fatal tragedy.
