The Reno County Commission on Wednesday unanimously approved spending $958,900 on a lightly used 2024 Caterpillar 826-11 landfill compactor, a move expected to save the county approximately $395,000 compared to buying a new machine.

Solid Waste Director Megan Davidson told commissioners the equipment, purchased from Foley Equipment in Wichita, replaces a 2009 compactor that had logged more than 34,000 hours and undergone two rebuilds. The replacement has approximately 1,900 hours of use, carries a new-machine warranty, and is available immediately, bypassing a typical six- to nine-month wait for new orders.

Because the landfill operates through an enterprise fund, County Administrator Randy Partington confirmed the purchase will not impact property tax revenues or resident landfill rates. The 5-0 vote, moved by Commissioner Randy Parks and seconded by Commissioner Richard Winger, also spares the county an estimated $28,000 to $30,000 expense to replace the wheel tips on the deteriorating 2009 machine.
