Reno County residents can expect a month of online-safety tips from the county after commissioners on Wednesday, Sept. 30, proclaimed October 2026 Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The observance is part of a [recurring national campaign](https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/news/cisa-launches-cybersecurity-awareness-month-securing-next-250?ref=citizenjournal.us) led by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the federal agency that oversees cybersecurity.

In a Facebook post announcing the proclamation, the county said it is committed to protecting county systems and information, and it urged residents, businesses, schools and organizations to make cybersecurity part of everyday life.

Throughout October, the county said, it will share tips on four practices:

- Using strong, unique passwords.
- Turning on multifactor authentication, a second verification step such as a code sent to a phone at login.
- Keeping software updated.
- Learning to recognize and report phishing, fraudulent messages designed to trick people into revealing passwords or other information.
