The meeting opened with a prayer for the mayor's recovery, as well as for the daughter of Commissioner DJ Perry, who was recently injured in an automobile accident. --- ### Commission approves $214,000 incentive for East Seventh Street entertainment complex PITTSBURG, Kan. — The city commission unanimously approved a $214,870 economic development incentive for developer Rob Dougherty to rehabilitate multiple deteriorated buildings on East Seventh Street, including the former Bubba's 311 Club. Dougherty plans a $2.1 million renovation to create a multiuse entertainment complex featuring a bar, an 18-and-up dance hall and several restaurants sharing a central courtyard. Despite a public comment earlier in the meeting opposing the use of city funds to subsidize entertainment venues, the approved measure will reimburse Dougherty for 10 percent of permanent fixed improvements using a dedicated economic development sales tax only after construction is complete. --- ### New Pittsburg child care facilities operating near capacity PITTSBURG, Kan. — During a public hearing Tuesday, administrators of the newly opened child care facilities at Washington School reported that they are operating near their 244-student capacity. The campus is divided between two distinct entities to comply with grant funding rules: Point Forward, a nonprofit child care operator that meets low-to-moderate-income requirements in the new building, and Grow at Eden, a for-profit center in the historic building. Administrators noted the only current vacancies are in the toddler classrooms, highlighting a persistent local demand for child care. --- ### City waives bid policy for $1.8 million street paving contract PITTSBURG, Kan. — Citing a shrinking window of favorable weather before winter, the city commission waived its standard bid policy to approve a $1.83 million contract with Emery Sapp & Sons for immediate street milling and overlay work. The unit-price contract will cover nine projects across the city, including sections of East Quincy Street, Ninth Street, South College Street and South Broadway.
