Newton Public Library will screen the 1928 silent film "Beggars of Life" at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.

According to [Newton Public Library’s event announcement](https://www.facebook.com/NewtonPublicLibraryKansas/posts/pfbid02o4dAzjE76Q9EjMJvpKjiTXu5WHKv5Vi7jC6FvLbkPNvmihRMjs47Vaq5RuuKooxl), interior designer and classic cinema enthusiast Kaylee Mansfield will introduce the film and its star, [Kansas-born actress Louise Brooks](https://www.kansashistory.gov/kansapedia/louise-brooks/16686?ref=citizenjournal.us), who was born in Cherryvale and later gained international fame during the Jazz Age.

The William A. Wellman-directed production follows an orphan who disguises herself as a young man and rides the rails with a drifter while fleeing the law.

The library’s announcement says Mansfield, who appeared during its 2025 “Color Our World” summer reading program, will lead a discussion after the screening and invite attendees to share questions and reactions.

The announcement also says Mansfield hosted a silent film event with the Wichita-based Tallgrass Film Association in 2025.

The program will be held at Newton Public Library, 223 E. Seventh St.
