Gertrude Elion was an American biochemist who overcame the Great Depression and gender discrimination to revolutionize drug development, winning the 1988 Nobel Prize. Inspired by her grandfather's cancer death, she developed groundbreaking medications including the first effective childhood leukemia treatment, organ transplant immunosuppressants, and early antiviral drugs.
