# McPherson wins $805,000 state grant to extend Northview trail east to Maxwell Street

McPherson has been awarded $805,000 through the Kansas Department of Transportation's Transportation Alternatives program to extend its Northview Avenue multi-use trail east to Maxwell Street, the city announced Wednesday, Aug. 26\. The grant covers 80 percent of eligible project and design costs, with the city responsible for the remaining 20 percent.

The money funds Phase III of the Northview 10-foot Multi-Use Trail Project, carrying the trail along Northview Avenue from Veranda east to Maxwell Street. The phase also includes a 5-foot sidewalk on the west side of Maxwell Street, connecting Northview to Darlow Drive.

Phases I and II run in the other direction, connecting Veranda west to the Meadowlark Trail, west of the U.S. Highway 81 Bypass. According to the city, those phases were also predominantly paid for with Transportation Alternatives money. Construction on the Phase II segment was underway along Northview Avenue in late October 2025 and was nearing completion in March 2026.

Transportation Alternatives is the federal-aid program KDOT administers for pedestrian, bicycle and other non-driving projects. The city said the McPherson award was part of more than $37 million in TA grants announced across Kansas in this round. The city's next step is to solicit engineering and design firms and begin project development. The city has not announced a timeline for hiring a firm or for construction.
