Mama J’s Sweet Rolls, Boba Pearls and First Baptist Church held side-by-side fundraisers on Oct. 21, 2026, in the Tractor Supply parking lot to help families impacted by the [Stryker tragedy](https://www.citizenjournal.us/p/8ab0c4ae-a553-4fad-88eb-f9304f2dd65f/). Local business owners, church volunteers, and residents gathered to support those affected.

Mama J’s raised $2,279.45 through its pop-up and donated 100 percent of the sales to the families. Owner Mary Schoenecker-Johnson said the fundraiser gave the family-owned business an opportunity to help neighbors experiencing unimaginable loss.

“What prompted our business to organize this fundraiser was the overwhelming desire to support families in our community who are facing unimaginable hardship in the wake of this tragedy,” Schoenecker-Johnson said.

She said the fundraiser reflected local businesses’ responsibility to support the community beyond their everyday work.

“As a family-owned business, we believe our responsibility extends beyond what we do every day — it’s also about supporting our community when it needs us most,” Schoenecker-Johnson said.

Alongside the pop-up, First Baptist Church in McPherson ran a raffle that gave attendees a second way to contribute. Katie Schafer, owner of Locker Room Nutrition and Energy, and Jenner Alvord volunteered at the raffle table.

“I think as a small community, this is just what we do,” Schafer said.

Prizes included a sourdough kit from the Cook’s Nook, a Pampered Chef gift basket, a Branson trip gift certificate, and a $300 Digs Dog Care gift certificate. Tickets cost $1 each, $5 for six, or $20 for an arm’s length. The raffle will continue through Saturday, with winners drawn Sunday.

Schafer said donations helped the raffle grow as more residents asked how they could help.

“We had lots of people reaching out asking how they could help, and they had items and things they wanted to donate, so they built raffles,” Schafer said.

Residents described the fundraisers as an example of McPherson supporting its neighbors. Kathy Love said the event centered on “just coming together as a community and being there for each other.”

The tragedy was personal for Krissy Koehn. Her sons played for McPherson City FC and were coached by Coach Adrian, whose son Cole was killed.

“It’s extremely heartbreaking. You know, as I said, both my boys played soccer,” Koehn said.

Through pop-up sales, donated prizes, raffle tickets, and volunteer work, McPherson residents transformed grief into practical support. The fundraisers showed that when local families face hardship, community members stand beside them.
