The McPherson County Community Foundation has opened a fund to support the families who lost loved ones on Saturday and to help cover medical costs for those injured in the crash.

Two McPherson residents - Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35 - were killed on Saturday, Oct. 17 when a truck drove onto a soccer field and ran them over, according to the Wichita Police Department. The police say that [the investigation is ongoing](https://www.citizenjournal.us/live-updates-two-mcpherson-residents-killed-at-wichita-soccer-complex/).

Michelle Huddle, chief executive officer of the foundation, said in an interview with Citizen Journal that the fund was meant to be a conduit for the existing work that the McPherson community is doing - not replace it.

“We just want to make it easy for people to donate and easy for the families to get the help and assistance that they need to get the bills paid,” Huddle said. “100% of the fund is going to go to these families.”

Huddle also said that she wasn’t surprised by how quickly the community rallied around the families who were affected.

“I think it’s great that the community shows up for each other and they support each other and do whatever they can,” Huddle said. “No surprise to me.”

The deaths have hit the local soccer community hard. Cole Adrian was the son of Chris Adrian, head coach of the McPherson High School boys varsity soccer team. Before Monday’s varsity game at the high school stadium, McPherson players and their opponents circled up at midfield in shirts honoring Cole Adrian and Schafer as a crowd that overflowed the stands looked on.

The foundation is accepting donations both via check and online. The money can be used for funeral expenses, mental health expenses and medical bills, including for those injured in the crash.
