# McPherson board ratifies teacher contract weighted toward veteran staff

McPherson teachers will see the largest raises the longer they have taught in the district under a contract the school board ratified Monday, Aug. 17\. Teachers approved the negotiated agreement first, with about 90% voting in favor, before the McPherson Public Schools Board of Education gave final approval at a special meeting that day, according to a district media release.

The release describes a modest increase to the base salary and significant increases throughout the step and column structure — the grid that pays teachers more for years of experience, or steps, and for additional education and credentials, or columns — but attaches no dollar amount or percentage to either.

The release also says the agreement addresses employee health insurance following changes to the district's health plan, with negotiations covering plan coverage and the district's contribution toward employee insurance costs.

"The Negotiations team worked hard to come to an agreement that really represents the Board's commitment to taking care of our staff, both through compensation and benefits," Superintendent Cody Rierson said in the release.
