Young Anglers Reel in Success at 18th Annual Fishing Derby
Park Department preparation and community support overcome weather challenges for beloved youth event

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The 18th Annual Youth Fishing Derby drew an impressive crowd of young anglers over the weekend, with boys and girls ages 15 and under casting their lines despite intermittent rain delays. The popular community event saw families gather at Lakeside Park, where children eagerly competed for the biggest catch while learning valuable outdoor skills and sportsmanship.
The success of the derby was largely due to the dedicated efforts of the Park Department, whose staff spent days preparing for the event. Workers stocked the ponds with fish and enforced a no-fishing policy in the days leading up to the derby to ensure fair conditions for all participants.
