Opera Kansas Brings Aviation History to Life at McPherson Opera House
Local venue hosts "Staggerwing" performance celebrating Kansas aviation pioneers

The McPherson Opera House welcomed Opera Kansas last Thursday evening for a stirring performance of "Staggerwing," an original opera celebrating Kansas's rich aviation heritage and the pioneering spirit of early female aviators. The production, which received a $5,000 grant from the McPherson County Community Foundation's February general grant round, tells the remarkable story of Louise Thaden and Blanche Noyes's historic 1936 Bendix Trophy victory, while also honoring Wichita aviation pioneers Walter and Olive Ann Beech, who championed equality in the male-dominated field of early aviation. The performance brought to life a chapter of Kansas history that helped establish the state as the "Air Capital of the World".
