New Optometrist Brings Advanced Eye Care Services to McPherson
Walters Optometry welcomes recent graduate with specialized focus on children's vision and dry eye treatment

MCPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson welcomes Dr. Derek Bryant, the community's newest optometrist at Walters Optometry, who brings cutting-edge eye care services to local residents. The Winfield, Kansas native, who recently completed his doctorate at Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry, brings both clinical expertise and national leadership experience to the practice. During his final year of optometry school, he served as President of the American Optometric Student Association, representing over 7,000 students nationwide while balancing clinical rotations and board exams.
The new doctor and his wife Hannah, who recently joined Peoples Bank and Trust as a teller, chose McPherson after falling in love with the community during a visit last year. "It reminded me a lot of where I grew up—tight-knit, supportive, and full of pride in the community," said Dr. Derek Bryant. While offering comprehensive eye care services, he plans to introduce specialized myopia management for children using overnight orthokeratology lenses that can slow or stop nearsightedness progression. He's also bringing advanced dry eye treatments to address the growing number of cases in 2025. The couple, along with their miniature Australian Shepherd Sailor and cats Leonard and Sheldon, are eager to put down roots and get involved in local church and community events.
