City increases coverage to $1 million as cyber threats to municipalities escalate

Lindsborg Boosts Cybersecurity Insurance Tenfold

LINDSBORG — The Lindsborg City Council voted this week to dramatically increase the city's cybersecurity insurance coverage from $100,000 to $1 million, raising the annual premium from $917 to $5,178 in response to escalating digital threats facing Kansas municipalities. Finance Director David Hay told council members that municipal conference speakers now warn of cyber incidents as inevitable rather than merely possible, pointing to the recent cyberattack that crippled Wichita's city systems as a stark reminder of the risks. The enhanced policy through insurer Evolve, recommended by both the city's insurance broker and IT company, provides comprehensive protection including coverage for ransomware attacks, data restoration costs, and business income losses. The unbudgeted expense will be distributed across all city funds to minimize the impact on any single department's budget.
