Flammable Gas Leak Prompts Evacuation, Road Closure Near Conway

CONWAY, Kan. (June 17, 2025) — Emergency crews responded early Tuesday morning to a flammable gas leak near Conway after a well head at an underground storage cavern was damaged during a storm.
The incident occurred around 4:17 a.m. in the 600 block of U.S. Highway 56. Crews from the local fire department were dispatched alongside the Conway Fire Department, McPherson County Sheriff’s Office, and McPherson EMS after reports of a hazardous leak were received.
Upon arrival, responders were informed that a well head connected to an underground cavern storing propylene had been compromised. Propylene is a flammable hydrocarbon gas commonly used in the petrochemical industry.
As a safety precaution, authorities evacuated a small area surrounding the site and temporarily closed U.S. Highway 56 in both directions.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
Officials with OneOK, the operator of the storage facility, will be responsible for releasing any additional information regarding the leak and ongoing response efforts.
Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and follow guidance from local authorities as crews continue to secure the area.
