SALINA, Kan. — The McPherson High School Bullpups baseball team opened their Class 4A state tournament run with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Tonganoxie Thursday, powered by a masterful complete game performance from senior Ian Razak who struck out seven batters while scattering hits throughout the contest. The Bullpups struck first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Razak, but Tonganoxie answered to knot the score at 1-1, where it remained until McPherson broke through in the crucial fifth inning.

The Bullpups manufactured their go-ahead runs through timely hitting and smart situational baseball in the fifth inning, as Cade Strathman delivered a clutch bunt to move runners into scoring position before Brody Seidl drove in the tie-breaking run on an infield RBI. Carter Allen added valuable insurance with an RBI sacrifice bunt that extended McPherson's lead to 3-1, providing Razak with the cushion he needed to close out the victory. The win advances the Bullpups to Friday's semifinal round, where they'll face Rock Creek at 1:15 p.m., with the winner moving on to the championship game at 5:45 p.m. and the loser playing for third place at 3:30 p.m.
