# Manhattan launches collaborative street tree research project

Manhattan residents are being asked to help the city understand its local urban canopy as part of a new [street tree research project](https://www.manhattanks.gov/m/NewsFlash/Home/Detail/2302?ref=citizenjournal.us) announced Monday, July 27.

The collaborative effort involves the City of Manhattan, Kansas State University and the [Kansas Forest Service](https://www.k-state.edu/news/articles/2025/04/kansas-forest-service-protects-sustains-enhances-community-tree-resources.html?ref=citizenjournal.us). The study focuses on how community members connect with, value and view the street trees planted throughout their neighborhoods.

Signs have been placed near designated trees around the city to identify them for the research project and invite public participation. City officials hope the localized data will help guide future forestry and community engagement efforts.
