Lindsborg artist Mike Hartung's new political paintings go up Friday, Sept. 4, at the Smoky Valley Arts & Folklife Center. The show is followed Sunday, Sept. 6, by an artist talk and the first signing of Clay Wirestone's "Opinionated."

According to a news release from the center, at 114½ S. Main, the exhibition — titled "Political Porn" — is made up entirely of paintings Hartung created this year and takes on current events. The show runs through Sept. 27.

The Sept. 6 reception runs from 1 to 5 p.m., with Hartung's talk at 2:30 p.m., followed by a sneak peek and signing for the book by Wirestone, the opinion editor at the Kansas Reflector. The release describes that signing as the first of many events across the state for the newly published title.

Hartung earned a bachelor's degree in art education from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and was drafted to serve in Vietnam. He moved to Lindsborg in the mid-1970s at the urging of artists Don Osborn and Steve Scott, working from a loft studio there since.

The center's release says of the new work: "While some of the artwork is controversial and may be disagreeable to some viewers, it is the work of a prolific artist who uses his medium to journal and document events, politics, and stories — both real and imaginary — of our times."

The center is open Friday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
