# Hutchinson to host open house on permanent data center zoning regulations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson will host a community open house next week to gather public input as officials work to draft permanent zoning regulations for large-scale data centers.

The forum, scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 12, follows the Hutchinson City Council's [July 7 decision to enact temporary zoning rules](https://www.citizenjournal.us/hutchinson-launches-public-review-for-data-center-battery-storage-zoning/) for data centers and utility-scale battery energy storage systems. Those stopgap measures prohibited the massive tech facilities in residential districts and required developers to secure conditional use permits before building in commercial or industrial zones, preventing such projects from being constructed by right.

The open house will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Hutchinson Fire Department Command and Training Center, located at 3201 E. Fourth Ave. Attendees can visit information stations to learn how data centers operate, ask questions and share their priorities. City officials have noted that data centers present unique challenges compared to traditional commercial developments, often bringing intense electricity and water demands, noise concerns and specific infrastructure needs.

No draft regulations will be presented for approval at the Aug. 12 event.
