Hutchinson residents can drop off unwanted or expired prescription medications free and anonymously from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, when police collect them at Dillon's Marketplace, 3200 Plaza Way.

The Hutchinson Police Department is hosting the site for the [Drug Enforcement Administration's](https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug%5Fdisposal/takeback/takeback.html?ref=citizenjournal.us) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The department's announcement says the event has helped Americans dispose of old, unwanted or expired medications for 16 years to prevent drug misuse and abuse.

Hutchinson police also hosted the twice-yearly event in October 2025 and most recently in April. Past local coverage shows the department has often held it at the same Dillon's store.

According to the announcement, collectors will take tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs but will not accept syringes, sharps or illicit drugs. The announcement adds that liquid products such as cough syrup should stay sealed in their original container with the cap tight to prevent leakage.

The announcement says Take Back Day runs at nearly 4,200 drop-off sites nationwide and has removed more than 20.4 million pounds (10,200 tons) of medication from circulation since it began. The DEA's Take Back Day website lists other collection sites.
